Donax vittatus The Banded Wedge Shell
This bivalve mollusc has a thin broad shell which may reach 3cm in length. The shell is decorated with bands of colour and can be yellow, orange, pink or brown. The edgeof the shell has minute teeth to seal the shell from predators where the valves meet when closed. This suspension feeding species is mainly found on exposed sandy beaches and can quickly rebury itself with its powerful foot if it is washed out of the sediment by waves. Donax is preyed upon by many of the carnivorous molluscs, starfish and flounders which inhabit sandy shores. The sexes are separate and breeding usually takes place in spring and summer.
